Top construction award for Local Social Enterprise

October 28, 2013

A project which saw free energy saving measures fitted to properties in the North of Sheffield has won a top building industry award for a local Sheffield Social Enterprise. The award being the C.I.O.B. Excellance and Quality award

The scheme at Mansell Crescent is located in the Parson Cross area in the North of Sheffield. The area has high levels of deprivation and fuel poverty, Mansell Crescent in particular was chosen as ideal for a CESP funded scheme as the properties on there are of a Non-Traditional construction and therefore very expensive to heat.

SOAR Build is a unique, construction related Social Enterprise, which is a joint venture partnership between the private and public sector (Keepmoat and SOAR Enterprises) that specialises in External Wall Insulation, Plastering, Tiling and Painting.

The objectives of the partnership are:

  • Provide education and skills training opportunities
  • By the use of local labour assist in the creation of attractive, successful neighbourhoods where people want to live
  • Help create a strong economy
  • Provides a service to contractors and the supply chain
  • To offer a job, not a scheme, a wage not benefits and something around which to build a life
  • To provide real jobs and training for local people

The works to Mansell Crescent were carried out by a local Sheffield based Social enterprise construction company SOAR Build. SOAR Build carried out the External Wall Insulation element and were an integral part of the team ensuring that the scheme was delivered to a very high quality, within budget and on time.

Through working on this scheme SOAR Build were able to train new operatives up on installation of External Wall Insulation and this work formed part of them becoming Green Deal Installer Accredited positioning the business to grow and prosper under the opportunities under the Governments new Green Deal Initiative.

During the scheme residents remained in their homes throughout the works and many letters of praise were received by SOAR Build commenting on the difference the External Wall Insulation had made to their properties

As well as having an impact on individuals who live within their homes, the work has made a real difference to the appearance of Mansell Crescent with the street being transformed with the fresh look of the external wall insulation.

The Mansell Crescent scheme was highly replicable and the model using SOAR Build as a delivery partner is now being used on other Keepmoat schemes throughout Yorkshire and the East Midlands, delivering free energy saving measures

Philip Wright General Manager of SOAR Build commented that as SOAR Build are a local Social Enterprise it was even more special to be able to offer free energy saving measures to local residents in Sheffield and would jump at the chance of replicating this scheme in other areas of Sheffield. He added that although SOAR Build are a relatively small, Sheffield based Social Enterprise, amongst all the other short listed companies at the awards ceremony, to win such a prestigious award was a great honour and it just goes to show that size doesn’t matter.
